Apple has recently granted a patent which use capacitive, resistive touchscreens as well as surface acoustic wave forms to recognize your hands/fingers simply by the way you hold it.

After recognizing your hand the device may automatically switch to your previously-personalized settings. These sensors also allow for the entire device to become a sort of a control. If it ever gets announced by Jobs, it will undoubtedly change the way we interact with our gadgets.

Cecilia Mascolo has been part of a team at University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory exploring mobile phones as ’sensors’ that can monitor how the user’s emotions change according to their location, surroundings, relationships or the time.

EmotionSense integrates information gathered through different features of the mobile phone, location through GPS, movement through the accelerometer, proximity to bluetooth devices as well as excerpts of conversations and to create an impression of how someone is feeling.

Emotional Prosody Speech and Transcripts Library: There is an audio sample library, named as: ‘Emotional Prosody Speech and Transcripts Library’ representing 14 categories of emotions. Excerpts from conversations are compared to this library and then overlaid with data on location and so on, illustrating trigger points for stress or mood at home or work, in crowds or alone and at different times of day. Dr Mascolo who is working with fellow computer scientists and psychologists, is keen to emphasise that EmotionSense does not monitor mobile phone calls, but excerpts of real-world conversations that are deleted as soon as the analysis is completed.

Tool for Psychological Studies: “This is not a tool for spying, but a very specific development for psychological research” said Mascolo. She thinks of mobile phones as the most definitive, ubiquitous personal device that we carry, can give unique insights into our state of mind. “This is very significant because mobile phones are carried by people continuously and they forget who forget [about being surveyed], so new psychological studies can happen over long time scales and with large samples – something they are not yet able to do.” “We are trying to make the technology safe when keeping all the data in the phone,” she said.

Two Phases of Development: This research is still in its initial stages. Phase one used a small research group of 18 volunteers, using Nokia 6210 Navigator mobile phones running EmotionSense software, over a 10-day period. While, the second phase of development will focus on making the programme more energy efficient and exploring how additional features of the mobile phone could be used to expand the tool. “The point is where is this technology going, how can we make it safe, secure and unobtrusive,” said Mascolo.

Successful Trial: The research team was working to refine the system further by improving its emotion classification and its response to background noise. The successful trial will be detailed on Wednesday to the Association for Computing Machinery’s conference in Copenhagen.

Initial Results of EmotionSense: Results showed that 70% of the EmotionSense results tallied with what the volunteers had reported in a more traditional self-reporting survey. Grouping its analysis into either sadness, fear, anger, neutral or happy, EmotionSense found the home unsurprisingly triggered happy responses in 45% of results while being at work was responsible for 45% of ’sad’ recordings. Evenings prompted more intense emotions and volunteers were less expressive when in larger crowds.

Dr. Jason Rentfrow, a social psychologist at the University of Cambridge who also took part in the research, said: “This technology has the potential to transform the ways in which scientists study psychological states and social behaviour. The methods most often used rely on self-reports, which are subject to a number of limitations – people forget certain details and are sometimes inaccurate at reporting how often they engaged in particular tasks. Mobile sensing technology can overcome those limitations, providing unobtrusive and objective information about social behaviours and activities.”

Spatial View is developing its own iPhone mobile application, ‘3DeeSlide’ for 3D film viewing that will go along with a peripheral for your iPhone.

Now you can watch stereo 3D content on your iPhone and iPod touch with Spatial View’s 3DeeSlide. It’s an easily installed lens holder with Spatial View’s lenticular lens technology for high impact viewing of stereo 3D image and video content.

3D Viewing: This mobile application works in portrait and landscape mode. Instead of making you wear a pair of 3-D glasses, Spatial View ‘ll be using a thin film cover that will go over your iPhone’s touch screen. This will allow for a more independent form of 3D viewing, which makes a lot more sense for iPhone video watching as this is much more focused in on quick blasts of audience time rather than long sessions of film watching.

Compatible Devices: iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and even the iPad in the fall.

Cost: The lens is not as expensive as you might have thought, it is only for a mere $20.

Powermat’s wireless mobile phone charger solves the problem of the people who hate the mess of cords that come with gadgets.

The Powermat is a black piece of plastic about the size of a haddock fillet. After plugging the Powermat’s cord into an outlet and fitting your mobile phone with either a special case or a white fob (a receiver sleeve) with a cord, depending on the mobile phone, you can charge the device wirelessly – more or less.

Wireless Charging: The Powermat works via magnetic induction, when you put a device on the mat, magnets pull it into the right position. A light on the mat turns on and a chime sounds, indicating the connection. You have to plug your phone into something, whether it’s a fob or a specialized case. The fob even has a little wire going from the base of it to the plug, so the Powermat’s sales pitch runs into a semantic wall there.

Stops When Charged: Once a mobile device is fully charged, the Powermat stops charging it automatically, unlike your usual wires and the mobile phone dings when disconnected from a charger.

Price: The standard Powermat for $99 comes with the mat itself, an adapter fob and eight adapter tips to fit different phone charger ports. The special cases for iPhone sets ($40), various BlackBerry handsets ($30) and other devices are sold separately.

Telenor LogoThe senior management of Norwegian telecom company Telenor Pakistan is considering to take an action against its officials who have pushed the company into serious problems that have cost money and reputation to the company.

In past. a few important officials of Telenor’s marketing section have been dismissed due to such failures and now again a few might be fired for making the immoral Internet.More advertisement. “They forget that they are living in Pakistan while designing promotional material which cost Telenor money and reputation,” an official said adding that “either they are unaware of the ground realities, too naive or self-assured. They cannot think beyond their interests.”

An Assault on Sanctity of Women: The marketing section of Telenor Pakistan was behind the immoral Internet.More TVC advertisement that was based on disgraceful words used against women who form more than 51% of Pakistan’s population. Labelling a college girl as ‘Taza Hawa Ka Jhonka’ shows the level of ethics and degradation among the architects of such immoral advertisements, this is surely an assault on sanctity of women for majority believing in social values.

Anger Raging Advertisement: The advertisements of Telenor have attracted more mass rage than any other telecom company. The misuse of mobile internet service is being promoted unethically targeting immature minds of college and school going students.

World Health Organization is playing a major role in the response to the flood emergency providing medicines, deploying health staff and restoring primary health care.

The destruction of many Basic Health Units (BHU) and medical centres has severely affected the level of health care available for people. Many people that were displaced during the floods are now returning back to their place of origin to find only devastation.

“Now we have to deal with two different types of responses. While in some districts of Sindh flood continues to spread and people are still being displaced, in Punjab and in the North of the country the situation has started to improve and support is needed for rehabilitating damaged healthcare facilities” said Dr. Guido Sabatinelli- World Health Organization Representative in Pakistan.

A recent survey showed that 514 health Facilities were damaged or destroyed in the flood affected districts of Pakistan.

Mobilink has generously offered through WHO to restore the health services in the affected districts of Pakistan by providing 244 high quality prefabricates which are easy to assemble and ready to use as BHU. These prefabricated sheets will be made into more than 100 BHUs nationwide.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mobilink and WHO, President and CEO of Mobilink, Rashid Khan said; “No crisis is too big if we stand united and form meaningful synergies. Our partnership with WHO, to whom we are grateful, is a testament of Mobilink’s commitment to reach out to millions still awaiting a helping hand. We have contributed more than Rs. 236 million towards flood relief and our employees and associates continue to volunteer their time, energy and expertise in the relief process to reshape live son ground.”

“World Health Organization is grateful for the contribution by Mobilink and will work closely with the provincial Governments to identify the locations where to install these prefabricates. WHO will also provide furniture and equipment to transform these infrastructures into Basic Health Units and Medical Centers while the Ministry of Health will ensure medical staff to make these BHU fully functional,”said Dr Sabatinelli in the signing ceremony of MoU.

This free mobile application for the Apple iPhone is the brainchild of Prof Blair Hodges of Penn State University and Sudhir Kumar, a PhD graduate of the same university now at Arizona State University. Users enter the names of any two species or families, and TimeTree mobile application will tell how long ago their common ancestor lived. A circular ‘Tree of Life’ image shows the route life has taken from its single source to the 1,610 taxonomic families that exist — containing between seven and 100 million individual species.

Windows Phone 7
While we are waiting for Microsoft to declare the official launch date of Windows Phone 7, many are thinking that the software would be officially released in U.S. on November 8 while on 21st Oct. 2010 in European countries.

The OS, however, is expected to first arrive in the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 is a completely new mobile operating system, built from the ground up. It is of its erstwhile Windows Mobile smart phone operating system which was struggling to maintain its lead and has, since the advent of Android and iOS, seen a major slump in its market share.

User Interface: The user interface of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is completely different from anything currently on the mobile market. It’s made up of large tiles that can be organised in any way you wish. Tiles can be “pinned” to the home screen, and the default tiles can be removed. You can simply press and hold a tile to move it around the screen. The tiles offer a refreshing look and feel, with large text and live images. Take for example, the “People” tile which is a centralised hub for multiple forms of communication with contacts. This tile will display live photos of the last few people you’ve interacted with. There’s no limit to the number of tiles you can pin to the home screen which means that it can be as long or as short as you want it to be. Once you open one of Windows Phone 7’s default “hubs” (People, Pictures, Games, Music, Video, Marketplace, Office), the UI utilises a panorama-style view. Slide left and right to browse through the panorama; for example, the People hub consists of a list of those you’ve had recent contact with, all of your contacts and a “What’s New” list that integrates real-time Facebook and Windows Live updates.

On-screen Keyboard: The on-screen keyboard is excellent. The keys are well spaced and make a soothing clicking sound when pressed, while the built-in spell corrector allows you to tap on a word to bring up a list of suggested words.

‘People’ Hub: Instead of a regular contact list, Microsoft has opted for an optimised “People” hub. You simply enter your Facebook, Windows Live ID and other e-mail accounts (the OS naturally supports Microsoft Exchange e-mail) and it automatically gets your contact list and keeps them updated in real time. Facebook status updates, e-mails, calls, messages and IMs all appear in this single People hub (you can also choose not to display your Facebook contacts).

Negative Points About WP 7: Windows Phone 7 has no support for multi-tasking third-party applications. Microsoft says that the reason for this is to preserve performance. This is something that the company is all too familiar with considering it was a huge issue in Windows Mobile 6.5. There are a number of issues with Windows Phone 7, headed by the lack of a copy and paste function. The popular social networking website, Twitter is not included in WP7. But despite of these, the Windows Phone 7 UI makes the iPhone and Google Android interfaces feel slightly dated.

BlackBerry PlayBook
RIM (Research In Motion), introduces BlackBerry PlayBook, an ultra thin mobile tablet with a design that makes it very convenient to carry. It is half inch thick and holds the secrets of greatest creation in the world of mobiles in it.

“RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world’s most robust and flexible operating systems. The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromise web browsing and high performance multimedia,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion.

Design: With 7″ high resolution display, the mobiles adds style and grace to your personality. Its 1024×600 screen weighs 0.9 pounds, thus making smaller and lighter than the iPad, with a more pixel-dense screen. It’s a little bigger and heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Operating System: BlackBerry PlayBook is running BlackBerry tablet OS, which is “powered by QNX technology.” QNX is a software company RIM bought in April, whose software is used in products by Cisco and GE, among others. The OS is built on QNX’s Neutrino microkernel.

Multi-tasking: The implication is that the PlayBook will let things run willy nilly in the background, more like a standard BlackBerry mobile phone.

Built-in Flash and AIR: It runs Flash and AIR, which means that the flash websites that don’t work on the iPad will be viewable on the PlayBook. Combined with the WebKit browser, it should be a pretty decent web experience.

Dual Camera: BlackBerry PlayBook has dual camera, the rear camera is a 5-megapixel shooter, while the front is three megapixels. From the back, it shoots video and from the front you can video chat.

Video Players: It supports a handful of video formats—in 1080p—like h.264, WMV, DivX and MPEG, and it’ll output video through a mini HDMI port. Also, it’s got a standard micro USB port.

Availability: RIM says it’s coming out in the US in early 2011, with other places getting it sometime after March. There’s gonna be 3G and 4G models in the future. RIM has not disclosed its price yet.

The north eastern state of Assam in India has been hit with a rare case of exploding mobile handsets, which the locals have termed ‘bombile.’

Mobile handsets exploding is not a new phenomenon, but about 30 different mobile phones suddenly exploding within a week when users answer a call with the incoming number highlighted in red colour is rare, and requires a scientific explanation.

Victims Hospitalized: More than 20 people have been admitted to various hospitals in Assam during the past one week, with victims complaining of nausea and a splitting headache, while a few of them have been reported to have suffered mild bruises. Although nearly 10 victims have lodged a police complaint, law enforcers are perplexed and do no not know whom to file a case against in these bizarre cases.

Big Mobile Brands Exploding: According to the locals is not just the low-cost Chinese handsets that have exploded, but even those of reputed brands makers including, Nokia, Samsung, as well as LG and Motorola.

Scientific Reason Demanded: This rare incident has even caught the attention of Assam’s chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who has wisely ordered a scientific probe to find out whether the cases are genuine or just rumour mongering. Reliance Telecom Ltd has forwarded the problem to its head office for an internal investigation since they could not come up with a logical explanation.

Weak Signals: The only logical explanation for the mobile explosion according to a telecom expert is that, “There is a remote possibility of the battery exploding if the user makes or receives a call in an area where signals are weak, which makes the mobile handset draw full power from the battery to connect the call. During this process, there are chances that the battery, if not of a good quality make, could explode due to overheating. Mobile phone operators are fully aware of this problem, but will not admit it since they have not installed sufficient towers, which comes at a huge investment.”

Karachi Customs Agents Association (KCAA) on Tuesday said decision to wind up Pakistan Custom Computerized System (PaCCS) is not in the national interest as it would damage revenue collection and impede trade.

Closure of the first true initiative at e-governance in the country will be unfortunate. It will push Pakistan back into Stone Age, said President, KCAA, Saifullah Khan in a statement issued here today. He said that whole world is pushing computerisation while we are reverting to obsolete systems and manual procedures.

“Customs does not have the capacity to cope with the ever-increasing load of trade therefore there is no point in closing PaCCS,” he said.
He said that reverting to manual procedures would support corrupt elements while country will suffer from reduced collections. Claim of reforming tax administration should be practiced to bail out country from shackles of poverty, he demanded. How can officials concerned send a state-of-the-art system packing when there is no alternative available, he questioned.

Khan said that majority of the stakeholders including that Customs agents were very satisfied with the performance of PaCCS, the first end-to-end automated solution for Customs in the world. Senior Vice President, KCAA, Qamar Alam said that manual, non-transparent and discretionary processes are still intact hindering reforms.

“We were satisfied with PaCCS,” he said adding that development of country is impossible without automated processes requiring no human contact.
A system in which the files can be lost, stolen or simply disappear is not encouraging. We prefer automated machines to staff that works without fear or favour, he said adding that it should be introduced in other parts of the country.

The founder of I’mHalal, the world’s first Islamic orientated search engine, has said the site is seeing an “almost viral” surge in traffic as it celebrates its first anniversary.                           http://www.imhalal.com/

The site, which filters content that might be considered ‘haraam’ or unclean, is turning over 300,000 queries a day and has plans to roll out bespoke search engines for users, said CEO Reza Sardeha.

Sardeha, a Kuwaiti-Iranian based in The Netherlands, said: “The increase in user base is almost viral. A month ago we were processing 100,000 search queries a day but yesterday we processed over 300,000 search queries."

About I'mHalal™
We are passionate about search and while we are leading the path of innovation in the search industry, our main goal is to serve a greater cause than to be solely a technology provider. Our initial team exists out of eight visionaries that believe excellence and progress can only be powered by true dedication and strong believes in a noble cause. We want to make the world a better place where Halal standards are better developed and promoted. Change doesn't come overnight but our company culture is optimized to support initiatives that will make the difference in the world.

Because there is no search engine out there that is truly build on top of social-cultural and ethical values, we have entered the search market to offer Muslim internet users a tailor made search experience. The I'mHalal™ search engine is the starting point of any exploration on the World Wide Web for more and more Muslim internet users. Alternative search engines are built for the great mass, which makes them extremely mainstream oriented while search is mostly cultural biased. This means that search algorithms should calculate the culture, mindset and lifestyle of the user in the determination process of relevancy. That's why I’mHalal™ is pioneering the integration of self-learning search algorithms that mimic human emotions and the way we think to power its search algorithm.

Finding the right information or documents has become more and more difficult over the past few years since the World Wide Web keeps constantly growing and changing at a vast rate. We use various algorithms to determine which websites, pages and documents are most relevant for Internet users from the Middle East, North Africa (MENA) and South East Asia (SEA).

We focus mainly on the MENA & SEA regions because there is a huge lack of technological advancement in these regions. It is our goal to kick-start the innovations coming from the Islamic world once again. We cherish the culture and lifestyle of Muslims living in these regions and have the feeling that the current state of the Internet isn't representing the values, mindset and lifestyle of these Internet users.

That's why we have introduced I'mHalal™ as the first local in-house search engine of the MENA and SEA regions. The award-winning I'mHalal™ search engine allows you to explore the Internet to educate yourself about any subject at anytime in the most effective and relevant way.

The Brand
I'mHalal™ literally means I am Halal. Halal isn't only related to foods and drinks. Halal is a lifestyle: "I eat Halal, I think Halal, I live halal".

I'mHalal™ search mission
Because the Internet is constantly growing at a vast rate and there is a lot of content generated by Internet users, our mission is to make the unstructured information accessible in the most relevant way.

Objectives:
■Make Arabic content better accessible.

■Improve local search in our target countries.

■Innovating the search industry.

■Promote the integration of Halal standards in modern technology.

■Serve 75% of all search queries conducted in the Middle East within two years.

■Lobby to raise awareness and motivate governments located in the MENA & SEA regions to invest in the technology sector.

■Support and start initiatives to make the world a better place.

I'mHalal™ Advertising Platform
I'mHalal™ is proud to introduce the first contextual advertising platform based on intent of the MENA and SEA regions. An advertiser can catch a searcher at the very moment when he or she is looking for information with our keyword based advertising platform.

Watan Card Project
NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) has launched a mobile SMS service in collaboration with the PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) in order to determine the recipients of the Watan Card and to devise a complaints lodging mechanism.

Tariq Malik, NADRA Deputy Chairman said, “We have people living in neighboring areas complaining that one of them is being declared as a beneficiary and the other is being deprived by the provincial government. This service will register the complaint, and allow us to address and resolve the issue(s) with local authorities.”

Service to Curtail Chaos: SMS service would handle recurring grievances pertaining to Watan Card issuance by allowing complainants to message a designated short code. The SMS service would also help curtail the chaos at the card centers, since the checking of the eligibility of the applicant for the Watan Card will be simplified.

Procedure: The person will send his/her computerised national identity card (CNIC) number to the designated short code 9888. In response, a text message will be sent from the NADRA central server confirming the particular CNIC’s existence in the beneficiary list.

Nokia C5
It’s been quite a while since I got any chance to play around with a Nokia Smartphone mainly because they were getting really repetitive in terms of software, but recently I got a chance to get my hands on the Nokia C5 and I have to say Nokia has done a good job in making a sleek looking Symbian Smartphone with all the necessary features for the road and at a very reasonable price tag.

Hands-On
The moment you hold the Nokia C5 in your hand, you’ll get a really good solid and sturdy feeling, even for it’s price, it’s really well made like any other Nokia handset out there.

The body is made of metal and doesn’t feel in any way that it might break easily even after crashing on the floor several times. It has a really acceptable 320 by 240 pixels resolution display with a size of 2.2 inches (diagonal), the screen behaves well under the sun and doesn’t fade away that much.

The screen is a TFT LCD display but I’ve noticed that it has really bad viewing angles, even viewing the screen dead on straight gave me some white gradients on the screen but that’s something which we can all live with.

The best part about the C5 is it’s huge keypad, it feels comfortable to type on and the keys are well placed. It has a rear 3.2MP fixed focus camera with an LED flash which is surprisingly good in snapping photos and shooting video, it also has a forward facing VGA camera for video calls and taking pictures.

The phone has all sorts of necessary wireless capabilities you’ll need on the go like EDGE but it lacks WiFi, it even has GPS receiver but lacks a compass. The C5 runs on top of Symbian OS V9 R3, if you’re familiar with using a Symbian handset before then you’ll feel like home while using the C5. Except for a few cosmetic changes in the UI, all is almost the same.

The best thing I loved about this phone is how fast it is, I’ve used many Nokia Symbian smartphones but in the candy bar form factor, this handset is fast and snappy, considering in which price range it falls into. Here are a few pictures showing off the Nokia C5 along with a size comparison with the Nexus One, HTC Wildfire and the Samsung Genoa.

Price and Availability: Noka C5 Price In Pakistan
If you want a smartphone and you’re on a really tight budget, then the Nokia C5 is the way to go!

With the price tag of just RS. 14,200, it’s a giveaway! The Nokia C5 is available in every mobile store across Pakistan and with different warranties.

I would highly recommend this phone if you want a no non-sense and straight forward to-the-point handset for daily use.

iPhone Vs HTC EVO
Apple iPhone 4 and HTC EVO 4G are by far the two most exciting smartphones that money can buy to date. And in many ways they are very similar: both have big full-phone-size touchscreens, smart operating software, lots of free or cheap applications, high resolution photography and video recording, video call capabilities, etc. One imagines for a consumer who is not technically sophisticated it will be an absolute guess whether iPhone 4 or EVO 4G will work better for him or her. But yet somehow Apple and HTC have managed to design two completely different smartphones despite playing on the same field by the same rules.

So it is decided to try and look at both of them as if there was no such criteria as price, carrier, data plan, or even quality issues iPhone 4 and EVO 4G users have already experienced.

HTC EVO 4G
First up the EVO. It has been around a bit longer than the iPhone and it’s a first ever mobile phone to support 4G network. In plain English it means your Internet connection will be faster when Wi-Fi is out of access – exactly what iPhone 4 owners will be jealous of considering video calling (iPhone 4 can only do FaceTime, as they call it, on Wi-Fi). In hardware respect EVO 4G is brimmed up with latest technology (check out the specification list below). One of the few things one might not be completely satisfied with is the display. Yes, at its 4.3 inches it is quite big, but it is a standard LCD technology which compared with AMOLED or indeed high pixel density Retina opposition doesn’t perform just as good. On personal note, I also don’t like EVO 4G’s shape at the back of it. iPhone 4 is flat whole round witch most people like better – it feels nicer in a pocket and in hand as well. Still, half of the reason to buy EVO 4G is Android. At the moment of writing it is shipped with Android 2.1 but 2.2 Froyo update is cooking as we speak. And that is very important for the EVO 4G. You’ll expect this kind of smartphone to offer some of the best Internet experience in the market. It does. Android claims to have the fastest mobile browser whilst along with further enhancements Froyo quadruples Flash performance. Mind you that Safari doesn’t support Flash at all. Plus Android has true multitasking but will run its battery flat faster. All things considered including the audience that has actually bought HTC EVO 4G I’d recommend it to someone who captures and enjoys the sweet spot of the latest technology and extremely capable operating system. If you are not among them but you like the HTC EVO 4G, don’t worry – it will still fit you well.

HTC EVO 4G specifications

•Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon @ 1GHz

•RAM: 512MB

•Operating system: Android 2.1 (2.2 update this year)

•Display: 4.3" TFT LCD, 800 × 480 resolution

•Storage memory: 8GB, up to 32GB w/microSD

•Rear camera: 8 megapixel

•Front camera: 1.3 megapixel

•Video recording: 720p @ 30fps

•Battery capacity: 1500mAh

•Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g (/n w/Android 2.2)

•Cellular network: 4G

•Size: 4.8 × 2.6 × 0.5

•Weight: 6oz

Apple iPhone 4
This, in my opinion, is the most charismatic smartphone if you accept this kind of description for a device. It certainly has the X factor that makes you take it out of your pocket just to let the others see it. EVO 4G will never be able to pull that off anytime anywhere. In front of tech enthusiasts – yes, absolutely, but that’s almost about it. Another feature peculiar to the all of the iPhones so far is that somehow they remain modern and up-to-date through all their lifetime and right up to the moment when the next-gen model is presented. I mean this time last year we could hardly wait for HTC Hero to come out. But after it did, it didn’t stay long in our hearts. iPhone 3G S on the other hand kept its positions till June. Even now I can tell the same will happen to the iPhone 4 – everything coming out next year or so will be put up against it. Should this affect your choice? – Yes, at least at some degree. It receives that kind of treatment for a reason. iOS 4 and hardware that runs it are not any less capable than the EVO’s and Apple app store does offer more apps, but unfortunately iPhone 4 also has a problem or two. As I said above Safari doesn’t support Flash and the operating system itself doesn’t have full-flesh multitasking but runs a number of services instead. However, running services in the background rather than processes improves greatly on battery life while keeping usability basically on the same level. That’s a small price to pay for some features you get with the iPhone 4 that others can’t match. One of them is, of course, Retina display. Enlarging pixel density is really a path to follow for all upcoming devices because physically they cannot get much bigger while display resolution has to grow. All in all if you for some reason didn’t like HTC EVO 4G you will almost certainly like iPhone 4, but it won’t necessarily work vice versa.

•Processor: Apple A4

Just what the heck is this? Why are there Care Bears Shine rays coming out of it? Well, for just $63.42, you can have the answers to all those questions, although reading through this post will also shed additional light on the handset. This phone will come with a transparent crystal keypad (warning to butterfingers!), where it can light up with 7 different colors to further enhance its sex appeal. Not only that, you get quad-band GSM support, dual SIM card slots, an advanced G-sensor, a 2.2-inch touchscreen display, a microSD memory card slot as well as Bluetooth connectivity. Oh yeah, and for trivia’s sake – it is called “Damascus” because it includes a special Muslim-themed startup/shutdown music and animation. A certain pastor from Florida sure as heck ain’t gonna be dropping $65 clams for this!

Sony's motion controlled gaming setup, PlayStation Move, has arrived in stores, and if you believe the hype, it's everything we wanted the Wii to be...and more. Is this the future of gaming or just another expensive set of peripherals that will be buried in the back of a cupboard by the end of the year? Read on for our review. Hardware

PlayStation Move's 1:1 controller tracking is just as precise as the Wii with its MotionPlus accessory, but also adds body tracking into the mix thanks to the PlayStation Eye camera. It's also $10 cheaper per player for a "complete" controller setup (Move + Navigation controller). The downside is that due to the limitations of Bluetooth, only two players will be able to simultaneously use a dual Move controller setup or a Move and Navigation controller setup, whereas the Wii can support four players.

The starter bundle, which includes the PlayStation Eye camera, a single Move controller, and the Sports Champions game is available for US$100 (though our readers outside the US should be aware that their PlayStation Move bundles may not include Sports Champions). Additional Move controllers are US$50 and Navigation controllers are US$30, though the only game I know of that requires a Navigation controller so far is Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, which recently had Move support patched in.

The controllers are stuck with built-in, non-user replaceable lithium-ion batteries, and there's no automatic sleep mode after a period of inactivity, so you need to manually switch the controllers off when you're not using them. Anyone who's ever had a group of people over to play Wii or peripheral-based games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band will know that you always need a stack of AA batteries on hand to keep the action happening. Sony's choice of built-in batteries means you'll need to make sure everything is charged ahead of time, otherwise you'll have players out of action, waiting for controllers to charge over a USB cable.

Software
The launch titles are a little underwhelming. The Blu-ray titles all come in at the second-tier US$40 price point, but for the most part, they feel like fleshed-out tech demos that would be better suited as $10-15 downloads from the PlayStation Network. Sports Champions is the exception, and by far the standout title so far. It's not that I didn't enjoy my time with Kung-Fu Rider and Start the Party, it's just that I would've felt a little hard done by had I spent US$40 on them. Luckily, there's demos of all the launch titles (and a few upcoming titles) available on the PlayStation Network.

While we can expect countless sports and party games for the casual set, the real test of PlayStation Move as a viable platform will be the games for the hardcore set - and the latest installments of popular franchises like Gran Turismo 5 (due November), Killzone 3 (2011) and SOCOM 4 (2011) are all set to feature Move support. I'm not only looking forward to playing these games, but really looking forward to seeing whether dual analogs or motion controls will emerge as the dominant control set for competitive online games (though my money is on motion controls).

Triple-A first-party titles aside, if the third-parties don't offer strong support for Move, the platform is going to become fairly stale by mid-2011. Over a year since the Wii MotionPlus launched, there's still under 20 games that can utilize the enhanced accuracy - I sincerely hope the same does not happen to Move.

The Verdict
At this stage, PlayStation Move is likely a hard sell for any gamers on a budget. The hardware is fantastic, and Sports Champions is a great launch title, but there's nothing truly revolutionary so far...if you've owned or played a Wii extensively, that is.

For people that already own a PlayStation Eye and/or existing games that have received free updates to add Move functionality, like High Velocity Bowling, Hustle Kings, Planet Minigolf, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 and Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, a small outlay on a single player Move setup represents a much better value proposition.

Personally, I sold my Wii setup (which has been gathering dust for years) and stocked up with four Move controllers, and I'm considering heading down to the store today to pick up a Navigation controller and Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition in preparation for a lazy weekend.
