10. Dendrobium


Dendrobium is a genus of orchids, mostly spread in Asia. Its name in translation from Greek means “tree and life”, in other words “life on a tree”. These types of orchids normally grow fast in summertime, and take a rest throughout winter. Even though these flowers are under the protection of International Convention of Restriction on Trade of Wild Animals and Plants, you can still find many of this kind of flowers sold in small flower pots.



9. Lantana


This flower is widely spread in Columbia and Venezuela, as well as in Central and South America. The plant itself is very tall. In the tropics, for example, they grow even taller. The leaves of Lantana are aromatic when crushed. The flowers are initially yellow or pink, then gradually changing to orange and red. It is also possible to see different colors of flowers on one and the same cluster.



8. Rudbeckia


Its name varies from country to country. In its homeland, in North America, it is famous as a black-eyed Suzanna, in Germany, for instance, a solar hat, in Ukraine: an ox-eye. But initially, the origin of its name comes from the times of Carl Linnaeus in honor of his teacher and friend, Swedish botanists, father and son Rudbeks.



7. Hyacinth


A hyacinth has received its name in memory of a fine Greek fellow Hyacinth, who was loved by God Apollo and the West Wind, Zephyr. Still in old Greece, love to the same sex was already spread. Since Hyacinth did not have any feelings for Zephyr, the latter got angry and struck the fellow with a discus. The fellow died, leaving Apollo with an emptied heart. So Apollo made a flower from Hyacinth’s spilled blood. Hyacinth bulbs can be reason of irritation to sensitive skins, so always remember to wear protective gloves when handling them.

Mostly spread in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, this flower requires cool temperature regions. These white flowers are one of the best ones for weddings. Many people decorate a wedding site with these clean and fresh looking flowers.

A common name for this flower is “bird of paradise flower”, since its flowers resemble the bird of paradise. This genus, widely spread in South Africa, has five species of perennial plants. Some of its species have large leaves, similar to banana leaves in appearance, but way too long.

Hydrangea or Hortensia, is a genus of more than 70 species of flowering plants, native to North and south America, as well as in China, Korea and Indonesia. Most of the species can be from 1 to 3 meters. Others can even reach about 30 meters by climbing up trees. Some of the species are evergreen. Pink hydrangea is popular all over the world, mostly in Asia. They have different meanings, e.g. “You are the beat of my heart”, as described by the celebrated Asian florist Tan Jun Yong.

The most beloved flower Sakura, also called cherry blossom, is the official symbol of Japan. The holiday of the cherry blossom takes place every year starting from March 27th. Nonetheless, sometimes the date can vary, depending on the period of the blossoming. Many Japanese public buildings have at least one cherry blossom tree in front of the building.

Lavender, a genus of 39 species of flowering plants, in the mint family, covers the areas from Southern Europe across to Northern and Eastern Africa, The Mediterranean, South West Asia to South East India. Lavender is mainly cultivated for garden or landscape use, as well as for extraction of essential oils. Lavender flowers may be blue, violet or lilac in the wild species, sometimes even blackish purple or yellowish.
