10. Dendrobium

Dendrobium is a genus of orchids, mostly spread in Asia. Its name in translation from Greek means “tree and life”, in other words “life on a tree”. These types of orchids normally grow fast in summertime, and take a rest throughout winter. Even though these flowers are under the protection of International Convention of Restriction on Trade of Wild Animals and Plants, you can still find many of this kind of flowers sold in small flower pots.

This flower is widely spread in Columbia and Venezuela, as well as in Central and South America. The plant itself is very tall. In the tropics, for example, they grow even taller. The leaves of Lantana are aromatic when crushed. The flowers are initially yellow or pink, then gradually changing to orange and red. A hyacinth has received its name in memory of a fine Greek fellow Hyacinth, who was loved by God Apollo and the West Wind, Zephyr. Still in old Greece, love to the same sex was already spread. Since Hyacinth did not have any feelings for Zephyr, the latter got angry and struck the fellow with a discus. The fellow died, leaving Apollo with an emptied heart. So Apollo made a flower from Hyacinth’s spilled blood. Hyacinth bulbs can be reason of irritation to sensitive skins, so always remember to wear protective gloves when handling them.
