Speaking at the occasion, Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading markets in telecommunications.

Chairman added that our potential for broadband success is driven by a number of factors. PTA as a regulator has an imperative role in ensuring continuous augmentation of broadband in Pakistan.

Though the principal duty with regards to broadband is to maintain a competitive broadband market, yet regulatory actions and strategies regarding broadband are supposed to reflect on the driving forces in form of expanding access, enhancing Citizen Digital Skills, Promoting Local Content and increasing value addition inside the Network (Intelligent Network) and services.

He said Wireless Broadband is surely an important area of consideration for the industry in future. People are interested in mobility and connectivity at the same time. We will be observing new era of wireless broadband in the country.

Chairman PTA also emphasized on improved quality of telecom systems and services in future, and focus on telecommunication not only as an element of support but also as a driving force of economic growth. He said, that given the state of economy, population growth and other socio-economic indicators, PTA has envisioned that total telecom investments will reach US$ 2.4 billion by 2020, whereas the Telecom sector revenues would cross Rs. 620 billion by the same year. In the wake of growing trend of the mobile services, it can be predicted that the fixed line subscribers would more or less maintain the 5 million averages till 2020, while the broadband subscribers are expected to reach 19.5 million. The mobile subscribers are expected to be around 161 million.

Chairman further added that, the frequency harmonization is extremely important to achieve benefits of rapid development in wireless technologies; making it imperative for administrations allows changes in frequency assignments in national interest. Several countries have formulated Spectrum Re-farming Policy Framework.
In order to promote wireless broadband dissemination in rural areas, the PTA would plan ahead to devise national spectrum re-farming strategy. I strongly believe that the rapid growth along with future endeavours is beginning of reaping the associated business, entrepreneurship and social benefits of this exponential ICT infrastructure. It is the time to open doors of opportunities to our young innovative minds; and bridge the unseen gaps, he added.

According to available details, relief bags have been distributed among the affected employees of Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Tharparker, Sanghar, Nawabshah and Larkana. The medical centers at Latifabad, Kotri, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah and Larkana have been converted into flood relief medical camps while three mobile medical units are also providing medical care to the people of remote flood affected areas.

PTCL has ensured that these camps and doctors are well equipped so that the maximum numbers of employees and their families benefit.

SEVP HR and ADMIN Syed Mazhar Hussain has expressed his sympathies for the affected members of the PTCL family in Sindh and has assured the organizations help and support to do the best possible for early recovery and rehabilitation of the affected employees. All PTCL health centers are also on red alert to treat the employees suffering from dengue fever during early stage. All exchanges and staff colonies are being sprayed with pesticides and fogging machines are being used to reduce the chance of dengue virus. The Board of Directors of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced the financial result of PTCL for the year ended June 30, 2011 in their meeting held in Islamabad today.

As per the press release issued on the occasion, PTCL Group revenues at Rs.104.6 billion for the year 2010-11 were 6% higher than the preceding year and profit after tax for the year is Rs. 8.4 billion. As such, the earning per share (EPS) of the group was Rs. 1.65 of which EPS for PTCL was Rs. 1.46. PTCL has already declared an interim cash dividend of Rs. 1.75 per share for the year 2010-11, the press release said.

President and CEO PTCL Mr Walid Irshaid commenting on the results said that during this period PTCL Group continued its strategy of innovation and futuristic approach which enabled the Group to show continuous growth. Pakistan has seen a boom in its telecom sector and information technology services in recent years which was recorded around 46.2 percent growth of subscribers and is placed fourth on the ranking list.


Sri Lanka is the closest South Asian country to Pakistan on the list of top countries which is at the 11th number with its broadband penetration growing in 30s while India lags at the 14th place in terms of broadband growth.

Serbia leads all countries surveyed with a 68 percent annual growth rate from first quarter 2010 to first quarter 2011, according to the July, 2011 Bandwidth Report.

Thailand and Belarus had greater percentage expansion than Pakistan, apart from top-rated Serbia during the period, globally.

Pakistan’s digital growth prospects have begun to look brighter lately. Besides having a large bilingual (English and Urdu) Internet using population, Pakistan’s software companies have carved a niche internationally in recent years.

According to government figures, the country’s information technology exports totalled $1.4 billion in the last financial year. Experts say the IT industry, which adds thousands of skilled workers every year, has the potential to hit multi-billion export target within next five to ten years. Additionally, mobile phone and wireless Internet usage are also expanding rapidly.

The survey data shows that China continues to lead the world in total broadband subscribers. As of the first quarter of 2011, China had over 135 million broadband subscribers, with the US at over 88 million subscribers in second place. Japan, Germany, and France followed China and the US in total subscribers.
