SOLUTION:

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is the basis for scheduling techniques such as the Arrow Diagramming Method and the Precedence Diagramming Method. At low levels of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), the interdependencies between activities can become so complex that meaningful networks cannot be constructed. To cater to the above-mentioned problems, one solution is to create "hammock" activities, which encompass several activities where exact cost identification cannot or may not be accurately determined. Some projects identify a "hammock" activity called management support (or project office), which includes overall project management, data items, management reserve, and possibly procurement. The advantage of this type of hammock activity is that the charge numbers are under the direct control of the project manager. In addition to this, there is a common misconception that the typical dimensions of a work package are approximately 80 hours and less than two weeks to a month. Although this may be true on small projects, this would necessitate millions of work packages on large jobs and this may be impractical, even if line managers could control work packages of this size. Cost analysis down to the fifth level is advantageous, from a cost control point of view. However, it should be noted that the cost required to prepare cost analysis data to each lower level might increase exponentially, especially if the customer requires data to be presented in a specified format that is not part of the company's standard operating procedures. The level-5 work packages are normally for in-house control only. Some companies bill customers separately for each level of cost reporting below level 3.

Breaking the work down to small work packages can provide accurate cost control if, and only if, the line managers can determine the costs at this level of detail. Line managers must be given the right to tell project managers that costs cannot be determined at the requested level of detail.

Solution:

Question # 1 (Marks 8) A portfolio of Rs. 1,000 entitles the investor to
receive dividend of Rs. 150 at the end of year 2011. Expected future sale
price at the end of year is Rs. 998. If the investor plans to sell the stock
in the market after holding it for one year, what will be the holding
period return for one year on this portfolio(in terms of percentage)?

Holding 1year return= yearly coupon payment / price paid + change in
price of the bond / price of bond
=$150 / $1000 + ($998-$1000) / $100
=.15+ (-.002)
=0.148=14.8 %
Holding period return=14.8%

Question # 2 (Marks 8) Find the variance and standard deviation for the
stock of a newly listed public limited company purchased at Rs. 1,000.
While making this investment there are 50% chances that the price of
investment will fall to Rs. 900 and 50% chances are that it will rise to
Rs. 1200 after six months.

Following step involve calculating Variance
1. Expected Value
2. Subtract expected Value form each possible pay offs
3. Square each of results
4. Multiply each result time ties probability and adds up the result
First we calculate the Expected value
(900 * 1/2) + (1200 * 1/2) = 1050
Subtract expected value from each possible pay off
900-1050 = -150
1200-1050 = 150
Square each of result
(-150)2 = 22500
(150)2 = 22500
Multiply each result time its probability and adds up the result
½ * 22500 + ½ * 22500
22500
Variance = 22,500
Standard deviation=square rout of variance
S.D=150

Question # 3 (Marks 4) In stock market XYZ company is offering 16%
annual return on bonds, however, Treasury Bills are providing 7%
annual return. Calculate the risk premium if an investor invest in XYZ
company
Risk premium = Risky return – Risk free return
Risk premium= 16% - 7%
Risk premium= 9%
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Question # 1:-
Holding 1 year return =

= 0.13
=13%

Question # 2:-
Expected Value
(900*1/2) + (1200 * 1/2) = 1050

Subtract expected Value form each possible pay offs
900-1050 = -150
1200-1050 = 150

Square each of results
(-150)^2 = 22500
(150)^2 = 22500

Multiply each result time ties probability and adds up the result
= ½ * 22500 + ½ * 22500
= 22500

Variance = 22,500

Standard deviation = square rout of variance

S.D=150

Question # 3:-

Risk premium = Risky return – Risk free return
Risk premium= 16% - 7%
Risk premium= 9%

Discussion Question

“On what grounds generally and specifically SMEs are denied finance by the banking sector?"

Note: Please restrict your answer to one paragraph. You may use points to answer but in this case avoid unnecessary details.

Solution:

The capacity for SMEs to fulfill their potential in an economy depends on the availability of finance. SMEs face problems when accessing to bank finance due to a market failure in credit markets The small firm’s access to financing may either come from supply side market failure like rejection from the banks side for reasons not connected with the viability of the proposal or high risk and costs associated with such loans or demand side market failure insufficient information in the project proposal, high cost of bank credit etc. Firm characteristics affect SMEs ability to access to bank finance. Firm Size, age, ownership type, industry sector and location were identified as important variables under this category. Smaller firms are more likely to face limited access to finance. Knowledge management is present in all organizational processes. Through effective utilization of technology and organizational resources knowledge can be effectively managed. Certain ideas (myths) are prevailing regarding the knowledge management. Discuss with Solid Arguments any two ideas of knowledge management that either these prevailing ideas are myths or absolute reality.

Solution:

Knowledge management is mere technology.
This is a serious misconception. KM is really about people, relationships, and a new way of working together as an entity in an organizational setting.

It is a unique way of thinking about work and about working. Imagine knowledge communities
of employees with common interests sharing information on best practice that help everyone do a
more efficient job. KM will work only if there is trust and confidence among coworkers. Over 80
percent of all technology-centered KM efforts have been known to fail because of a lack of attention to people .

Knowledge management is another form of reengineering.
Reengineering is efficiency-driven-a one-item attempt at introducing radical change in organizational processes to improve efficiency. The emphasis is on cost reduction and making better use of existing operations. Jump-starting such a business, however, often results in failure.
KIM is an ongoing renewal of organizational processes to learn in advance about the company’s future opportunities and contingencies. The concentration is on value added activities that demand innovation and creativity. This is ingrained in the day-to-day processes of the business.

Technology plays a critical role in the way information becomes available at
electronic speed.

6. Knowledge management is another form of reengineering.
7. Company employees have difficulty sharing knowledge.
8. Knowledge management works only within an organization.
9. Technology is a better alternative than face-to-face.
