...........
The Right Answer of first question is:

If a bond is selling at discount than the relationship between coupon rate.current yield and yield to Maturity would be :

Coupon Rate < current yield < yield to Maturity

or

Yield to Maturity > current yield > coupon rate

A bond will sell at a discount when __________.

The coupon rate is greater than the current yield and the current yield is greater than yield to maturity

The coupon rate is greater than yield to maturity

The coupon rate is less than the current yield and the current yield is greater than the yield to maturity

The coupon rate is less than the current yield and the current yield is less than yield to maturity

Rationale: In order for the investor to earn more than the current yield the bond must be selling for a discount. Yield to maturity will be greater than current yield as investor will have purchased the bond at discount and will be receiving the coupon payments over the life of the bond.

.................
Q no.1. What will be the relationship among coupon rate, current yield, and yield to maturity for bonds selling at discounts from par? (Marks=2)

If bond is selling at discount then :

Coupon rate < Current Yield < Yield to maturity

You can convert this equation in your own wordings.

Q no.2. Illustrate the aforementioned relationship and provide supporting calculations using the 8% (semiannual payment) coupon, 30-year maturity bond with par value of Rs.1,000 paying 60 semiannual payments of Rs 40 each assuming it is selling at a yield to maturity of 10%. (Marks=8).

If we treat it as annuity then this formulas will be used:

Bond Price = C*{1-(1/1+r)2*n)/r} +par/(1+r)2*n

=40*{1-(1/1+.05)60/.05 +1000/(1+.05)60

= 40*(1-0.054/.05) +1000/ 18.68

=40*18.92 + 53.533

=756.80 =53.533

= 810.33

Current yield = par or face value*coupon rate/price

= 1000*.08/81.33

= 9.86

It was to prove that if bond is selling at discount then YTM is greater than current yield and current yield is greater than coupon yield , so it is proved from above calculations that:

Coupon rate < current yield < YTM

8% < 9.86% <10%

Telenor Pakistan offers social services portal to help customers easily obtain vital information.

Telenor Pakistan is making it easier for customers to get medical tips, legal advice, career guidance and other useful information by simply dialing 1911 on their mobile phones. This new 24/7 social services hotline was created to help Telenor Pakistan subscribers obtain vital information in an affordable and easy to use way.

“I got free legal advice from the lawyer at 1911 for one of my long standing legal matters,” said Rahil, a 1911 user.

How it works

Today, when you dial 1911 from your Telenor Pakistan operated mobile phone, you are immediately presented with four options: Tele Doctor, Tele Lawyer, Tele Genie and Career Guidance. After making a selection, the user is transferred to their expert of choice, with an average waiting period of one minute, 10 seconds. All experts are licensed, experienced professionals who are employed by a third party service.

“Telenor Pakistan’s new 1911 social services portal was launched as an initiative to provide better social welfare services for our customers. We are giving them access to health care, educational guidance, legal advice and important facts with the press of a button,” said Lars Christian Iuel, Chief Marketing Officer, Telenor Pakistan.

The evolution of 1911

Telenor Pakistan originally introduced its 1911 service in 2008, as purely a Tele Doctors service. Its success was evident during the Baluchistan earthquake of 2008, when 10,000 calls were placed to the service each day following the natural disaster. The service has now been re-launched as a more comprehensive social welfare service, aimed at improving the quality of life for people in Pakistan.

Enhancing the lives of Telenor subscribers

Initial user feedback of the 1911 service has been positive, as Pakistani residents in remote areas are now able to easily access these social services, often in their preferred regional language.

“By launching 1911, we have made significant strides in overcoming the traditional barriers of availability, affordability and accessibility that often prevent people in Pakistan from obtaining vital social services,” continued Iuel. “We are confident that this service will continue to enhance the quality of life for our customers.”

Enabling access and creating value

Telenor Pakistan’s 1911 service is an example of how the Telenor Group focuses on bringing the benefits of mobile communications to people around the world. Through its communications services and cooperation with skilled partners, Telenor helps people access information that may improve their daily lives. This is in line with the Telenor Group’s Corporate Responsibility focus on “enable”, a concept that encourages the use of communications to create shared value for society and Telenor.

Here is the proposed solution.
Solution Q # 1 (Stock Beta)

Given:
Current price per share of common (Po*) = 80
Expected dividend per share next year (DIV1) = 5
Constant annual dividend growth rate (g) = 7%
Risk free rate of return (rRF) = 6%
Return on market portfolio (rM) = 10%
Beta (βA) =?

We know that:
Po* = DIV1 / {rRF + (rM - rRF) * βA – g}
80 = 5/ {6% + (10% - 6%)* βA – 7%}
80 = 5/ {6% + (4%)* βA – 7%}
80 = 5/ {(4%)* βA – 1%}
{(4%)* βA – 1%}*80 = 5
{(4%)* βA – 1%} = 5/80 = 0.0625
(4%)* βA = 0.0625 + 1% = 0.0625 + 0.01 = 0.0725
βA = 0.0725/4% = 0.0725/ 0.04 = 1.8125 Ans

Solution Q # 2 (Bond Valuation)

a) Given Data (Bond A):
Coupon payment per annum © = 2000*10%= 2000* 0.1 = 200
Required rate of return (rD) = 14% = 0.14
Par value or face value (PAR) = 2000
Maturity Period or Term = 3 Years
Bond Price (PV) =?

We know that:
PV = C1/ (1+rD) + C2 /(1+rD) 2 + C3 / (1+rD)3 + PAR / (1+rD)3
PV = 200/ (1 + 0.14) + 200/ (1 + 0.14)2 + 200/ (1+ 0.14)3 + 2000/ (1 + 0.14)3
PV = (200/1.14) + (200/ 1.2996) + (200/1.4815) + (2000/ 1.4815)
PV = 175.4386 + 153.8935 + 134.9983 + 1349.9831
PV = 1814.3135 (Bond A)

b) Given Data (Bond B):
Coupon payment per annum © = 2000*10%= 2000* 0.1 = 200
Required rate of return (rD) = 14% = 0.14
Par value or face value (PAR) = 2000
Maturity Period or Term = 5 Years
Bond Price (PV) =?

We know that:
PV = C1/ (1+rD) + C2 /(1+rD) 2 + C3 / (1+rD)3 + C4/(1+rD)4 + C5/(1+rD)5+ PAR / (1+rD)5
PV = 200/ (1+ 0.14) + 200/(1+0.14)2 + 200/(1+0.14)3 + 200/ (1+0.14)4 + 200/(1+0.14)5
+2000/(1+0.14)5
PV = (200/1.14) + (200/ 1.2996) + (200/1.4815) + (200/1.6889) + (200/1.9254) + 2000/1.9254
PV = 175.4386 + 153.8935 + 134.9983 + 118.4203 + 103.8745 + 1038.7452
PV = 1725.3704 (Bond B)

c) If ABC wants to minimize the Interest Rate Risk, which bond should be purchased? Why?
Answer:
When interest rate rises, bond price falls. Inversely, when interest rate falls, bond price rises. The longer the maturity period, the greater is the interest rate risk.
According to LAWARENCE J. GITMAN FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (12th EDITION) interest rate risk is the market interest rate fluctuation that directly affects the bond’s value that have constant coupon payment, to reduce the fear of market interest risk diversify the portfolio as it can be spread and chose the bond with shorter duration.

So, ABC should purchase bond A having the shorter maturity period than bond B.
Here price of bond A is 1814.3135 is greater than the price of bond B, which is 1725.3704

 Pros.

There are many business pros to N-Tier Architecture. For example, a small business can begin running all tiers on a single machine. As traffic and business increases, each tier can be expanded and moved to its own machine and then clustered. This is just one example of how N-Tier Architecture improves scalability and supports cost-efficient application building.

N-Tier model also make applications more readable and reusable. It reduces the amount of spaghetti code. Custom tag libraries and EJBs are easier to port to readable applications in well-maintained templates. Reusability multiplies developer productivity and improves application maintainability. It is an important feature in web applications.

N-Tier Architectures make application more robust because there is no single point of failure. Tiers function with relative independence. For example, if a business changes database vendors, they just have to replace the data tier and adjust the integration tier to any changes that affect it. The business logic tier and the presentation tier remain unchanged. Likewise, if the presentation layer changes, this will not affect the integration or data layer. In 3-Tier Architecture all the layers exist in one and affect each other. A developer would have to pick through the entire application code to implement any changes. Again, well-designed modules allow for applications or pieces of applications to be customized and used across modules or even projects. Reusability is particularly important in web applications.

As demonstrated N-Tier Architecture offers innovations in the standard Client-Server technology that spawned the Internet itself. It is but one of many web application frameworks. These are used to develop dynamic web sites, web applications or web services. They provide database access libraries, templates, and, as previously stated code re-use. Most web application frameworks follow the Model View Controller (MVC) which separate the user interface, the business rules and the data model. They provide authentication and authorization to provide security. This allows the web server to restrict user access based on pre-determined criteria. Web application frameworks also provide a unified API (Application programming Interface). This allows web application to work with various databases without requiring any code change. These frameworks also maintain a web template system.

Cons.

Single layer architectures do not adapt to changes very easily. Often a minor change in technology or requirements will result in a major rewrite of large portions of the application.

Since the design is more complex than the single or two layer design, the implementation will also be more complex. When compared to pure VFP single layered design data access performance may be affected. Because of the nature of the data access mechanisms the presentation layer’s user interface design may be affected.

Creates an increased need for network traffic management, server load balancing, and fault tolerance.

Current tools are relatively immature and are more complex.

Maintenance tools are currently inadequate for maintaining server libraries. This is a potential obstacle for simplifying maintenance and promoting code reuse throughout the organization

CS 601 3RD ASSIGNMENT SOLUTION

a. Is the transmission medium a part of the physical layer? Why or why not?
Solution:
The transmission medium is the physical path between transmiter and receiver in a data transmission system.
The term transmission medium can also refer to the technical device which employs the material substance to transmit or guide the waves. Thus an optical fiber or a copper cable can be referred to as a transmission medium.

Coaxial Cable, One example of a transmission medium
Electromagnetic radiation can be transmitted through an optical media, such as optical fiber, or through twisted pair wires,coaxial cable, or dielectric-slab waveguides. It may also pass through any physical material which is transparent to the specific wavelength, such as water, air, glass, or concrete. Sound is, by definition, the vibration of matter, so it requires a physical medium for transmission, as does other kinds of mechanical waves and heat energy. Historically, various aether theories were used in science and thought to be necessary to explain the transmission medium. However, it is now known that electromagnetic waves do not require a physical transmission medium, and so can travel through the "vacuum" of free space. Regions of the insulative vacuum can become conductive for electrical conduction through the presence of free electrons, holes, or ions.
b. What is the significance of the twisting in twisted-pair cable?
Solution:
They are twisted together for the purposes of canceling out electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources; for The significance of twisting in twisted pair cable is as follows:
Instance, electromagnetic radiation from unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables, and crosstalk between neighboring pairs.
It reduces the cross-sectional are exposed to magnetic fields, so reduces noise pickup on the line. The twisting also evens out the neg/pos exposure, minimizing common-mode noise.
If the two wires are twisted around each other at regular intervals (b/w 2& 12 twists per foot), each wire is closer to the noise source for half the time and is away for the other half
Twisting does not always eliminate the impact of noise but it does significantly reduce it
With twisting, therefore the cumulative effect of the interference is equal on both wires
Each section of wire has a “Load” of 4 when it is on the top of the twist and ‘3’ when it is on the bottom
The total effect of the noise at the receiver is therefore 0 (14-14)
c. What is the purpose of cladding in an optical fiber? Discuss its density relative to the core.
Solution:
Optical fibers are used to transmit light over distances of up to several hundred kilometers. A typical optical fiber consists of a cylindrical glass core, just a few micrometers in diameter, surrounded by a layer of a slightly different type of glass known as the cladding. Light in the core travels slightly slower than light in the cladding and this property tends to keep any light sent into the core from one end of the fiber from leaking out, until it reaches the far end. The cladding is a glass sheath that surrounds the core. The cladding acts like a mirror, reflecting light back into the core. The cladding itself is covered with  a Plastic coating and strength material when appropriate.
It gives strength to the fiber. In practical fibers, the cladding is usually coated with a tough resin buffer layer, which may be further surrounded by a jacket layer, usually plastic. These layers add strength to the fiber but do not contribute to its optical wave guide properties. Rigid fiber assemblies sometimes put light-absorbing ("dark") glass between the fibers, to prevent light that leaks out of one fiber from entering another. This reduces cross-talk between them.
d. How does sky propagation differ from line-of-sight propagation?
Solution:
You’re probably talking about bouncing AM radio waves, and lower frequencies off of the ionosphere, vs. higher frequencies radio waves, like microwaves, requiring line of sight from a transmitter to the receiver. The ionosphere, because it’s excited plasma, has a unique permittivity that reflects EM waves that are below a certain frequency. Waves that have a low frequency will be reflected back to the earth and can propagate greater distances around the earth when compared to the limits of line of site propagation. Of course now we have satellites.
There are various layers on the atmosphere. D - E - F1 and F2 layers. The F1 layer is opaque to low frequency radio waves (HF).
The medium frequency wave will propagate to the F2 layer.
E layer propagation works much the same way but reflects VHF and UHF (90 -800 MHz). VHF is really 30 MHz up to 300Mhz, but above 90 MHz the E layer reflects the signals better. Sporadic E is a densely ionized layer of Nitrogen atoms that are ionize\zed by high energy particles from the solar wind. Excited Oxygen Helium and Hydrogen atoms also plasmate too. These pasmated atoms (highly excited atoms) propagate UHF and microwaves, too.
Modulation types have no bearing on propagation, though Single Sideband (SSB) suppressed carrier with a bandwidth of 3khz and CW (Continuous Wave - 200 - 800Hz) and a narrow band with a narrow IF pass-band will be detected by the envelope modulation detector before any other modulation types at further distances.
The D layer will break down when the sun falls below the horizon, and medium wave signals will bounce of the F1 and F2 layers and travel further.
