Blog: Car Accidents Due To Cell Phone Use While Driving

The number of car accidents due to drivers using a cell phone is staggering. Using a cell phone while driving is compared to drunk driving and is banned in many countries. It is also banned in most states in the U.S. and many provinces in Canada. While the penalty is met with a fine in most countries, some enforce the ban with prison sentences.

It could be argued that conversing with someone present in the car or listening to the radio or music creates just as much distraction so the use of cell phones should not be banned while driving. However, from people’s personal experience, it has been seen that many car accidents, injuries and close calls took place when the driver was talking on his/her cell phone.

If cell phone use alone is not enough, many drivers indulge in texting while driving. This is more dangerous because while texting the driver is not even looking at the road. Both talking and texting while driving have caused accidents. It becomes especially dangerous when people try to multi-task while driving, such as handling kids, doing make-up or eating and drinking and talking on the phone at the same time.

Cell phones can be used before or after driving. Using a cell phone while driving is not more important than an expensive ticket, and certainly not more important than risking one’s own life and that of others. Hundreds of thousands of injuries due to car accidents could have been avoided if drivers avoided using a cell phone while driving. Not to mention the loss of loved ones who died tragically because some people were using a cell phone while driving.
