Broadband Subscribers
Despite the push in the last couple of years and the drop in prices, broadband penetration remains low in Pakistan. See the numbers below from PTA. If you look at the numbers for the 3-month period, from June 2010 to August 2010, and use that to project June 2011, then we have a forecast of 200,000 additional subscribers for 2010-2011. Based on that, the total number of broadband subscribers would be around 1.1M by June 2011.

The percentage growth is fine but the overall number is unacceptably low. Share of WiMax as technology is 29% of the total subscribers and is growing at ~18K subscribers per quarter. What are your thoughts on the growth rate for WiMax?

Orascom & Obopay
Orascom Telecom, Obopay, and the Mobilink Foundation are sponsoring a sustained effort to rebuild homes and lives for the children and families of Pakistan.

Although, the August 2010 flood waters in Pakistan have receded in Sindh Province, the devastating impact on life there will continue for months to come.Orascom Telecom, the parent company of Mobilink and Obopay, the mobile money solutions pioneer, have partnered to establish a text-to-donate relief effort in the United States to provide continuing funds to Pakistan in order to rebuild both the infrastructure and the lives of those affected by recent floods in Pakistan.

Aftermath of Pakistan’s 2010 Flood: The 2010 flood submerged 1/5th of Pakistan and affected twenty million people; equal to half of the population of California. This is more people than were affected by the 2004 Tsunami and the 2005 Kashmir and 2010 Haiti earthquakes combined. 1.9 million homes were damaged or destroyed, leaving more than seven million people still homeless.

Rapid Funding for Flood Relief: Where text-to-donate programs following the disaster in Haiti typically took 90 to 180 days to reach the right resources in the country, this new offering can provide much more rapid funding to the cause. “There is always an immediate sympathetic and monetary reaction when disasters like this occur,” said Naguib Sawiris, Executive Chairman of OTH, which operates in Pakistan as Mobilink. “However, the tremendous suffering, and the need for aid, continues for months after the initial tragedy. We want to make sure that funds continue to flow until the job is done. This becomes equally, if not more, important. The aftermath can end up taking as many lives as the initial disaster if action is not continued to restore the infrastructure–providing food, water and a renewed means of earning a living. And that is a huge undertaking. By employing Obopay’s ‘Text-to-Donate’ solution, individuals can provide truly meaningful donations which are delivered rapidly.”

Obopay’s Text-to-Donate Service: Obopay’s Text-to-Donate service has technology similar to that which was used to spur donations to the Haitian earthquake relief last year. One key difference, however, is that by making the credit or debit card and the bank account the source of funding for the text rather than the telecom bill, Obopay’s Text-to-Donate enables donors to contribute much larger amounts, as opposed to the $5 and $10 limits allowed through telecommunications companies. The money can also be put to use by relief organizations quickly. The funds generated by the text-to-donate program will be in addition to the Rs 236 million contribution already made by Mobilink towards flood relief. “When a catastrophe like this strikes, getting the proper amount of funds to the region saves lives. The sooner funds get in the proper hands, the sooner they can restore some semblance of order to people’s lives, not to mention fight the spread of disease and shortages of food and clean water. We are proud to be able to provide our services to Mobilink Foundation, to further scale their efforts in meeting the relief and rehabilitation needs of the people across Pakistan,” said Obopay Founder and CEO Carol Realini.

Mobilink Foundation’s Flood Relief Activities: The funds are then automatically deposited in Mobilink Foundation’s account, giving them fast access to the money to build much needed homes and shelters. Mobilink Foundation is a non-profit organization driven by Mobilink employees. To date, Mobilink Foundation has reached out to more than 115,000 individuals affected by the floods in far-flung areas including surroundings of Multan, Muzaffargarh, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swat, Sukkur, D.I. Khan as well as smaller towns and villages across Pakistan. The flood relief activities are driven by the volunteer spirit of a cross functional team of Mobilink employees involving Marketing, Sales, HR, Admin, Security, Finance and Sales. This ensures that all funds received and generated by the Foundation are spent directly and efficiently in relief efforts. The Foundation also procures packs of dry food ration (each unit sufficient for two weeks for a family of seven), hygiene kits (sufficient for one month for a family of seven) and non-food item packs containing kitchen utensils, mats, water coolers, bedding (non-perishable pack for a family of seven) and aims to support affectees in the rebuilding process and facilitate livelihood opportunities post repatriation. Rashid Khan, President and CEO, Mobilink said: “Our employees and associates have and continue to volunteer their time, energy and expertise in the relief process. As all this is done on volunteer basis, every penny donated is spent directly towards flood relief making the Mobilink Foundation ideally positioned to make a tangible difference on ground,” he added.

Procedure: “To donate through the OTH-Obopay Text-to-Donate offering, the mobile users in USA will have to so is text the keyword, “PAKISTAN” to the shortcode 48510, and they will receive a return text message with a link to a mobile internet checkout page where they can select to pay by debit card or by entering a mobile phone number and PIN. For more details and making online donation, go to www.shelterfromtheflood.org.

Nokia Ovi Store
Ovi Store software is downloaded three million times every day, up from two million in September, making it one billion downloads per year.

1.3 billion people worldwide use Nokia devices, though not all can run Ovi Store, which is limited to Nokia phones introduced over the last few years (such as Nokia S40 and S60 devices).

Nokia’s Software Development Toolkit (SDK): Nokia has launched Qt Software Development Toolkit (SDK), that is used by developers to create Ovi apps. The toolkit was downloaded 1.5 million times as developers could improve the speed and efficiency of creating apps for mobile devices, including smartphones such as the new Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 (on its way to India), and the recently announced Nokia E7. “We also announced unified application development around the Qt framework to simplify creating apps for Symbian-based devices and products that will be powered by the new MeeGo operating system,” said Tero Ojanperä, executive vice-president (Services), Nokia.

Increasing Mobile Application Stores: Most mobile app stores typically share 70% of mobile application revenue with the mobile application developer, while the rest goes to the mobile application store. Apple’s iPhone App store is the longest-standing in the market, having opened in July 2008. It was followed by the Android app store and BlackBerry App World store, which opened in February and April 2009 respectively. Without breaking up the downloads numbers, Nokia claims that countries like China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UK and Vietnam have shown active downloads from its Ovi store where games take top place in paid downloads.

Ovi Store’s Rapid Growth: “The rapid growth on Ovi Store to pass the one billion annualised download mark demonstrates that Nokia is a competitor in both scale and size when it comes to its services. With Nokia’s stronger focus on the Qt platform and improved developer ecosystem, Nokia should continue to see its developer numbers increase as developers see profit from new revenue shares, operator billings and the ever-growing user base around the world.” said Scott Ellison, vice president of mobile and consumer connected platforms at IDC.

Mobile Application Competition: Google’s Android Market that witnessed more than one billion downloads and hosts more than 160,000 apps. Apple’s ubiquitous app store has delivered over 8.5 million apps every day and not to forget Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 that is expected to make its presence felt globally. But Nokia maintains its bullish outlook.

Mobile applications and competing storefronts are shackled to the smartphone market. Developers said Nokia’s edge lies in its volumes. “Ovi Store is available on 20 different handsets that include both connected smartphones and cellular feature phones. Nokia still controls about 35 per cent of the world mobile phone market, thanks to the continued popularity of its low-cost feature Nokia mobile phones,” said iSuppli analysts who believe that consumer interest in apps is likely to grow faster than the smartphone market in China and Eastern Europe, and that should give Nokia a chance to continue building the Ovi Store.

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday reinstated 95 employees of Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL), reported Daily Times.

A PHC two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel allowed writ petition of PTCL employees and restored them on their old positions in the company.

Fayaz Afzal and other 94 terminated employees working on different positions including wireman, cable guards, drivers and computer operators, had filed a writ petition in the high court through Ejaz Sabi advocate praying the court to restore them as they were unlawfully terminated from their jobs.

Counsel for the petitioners contended that these PTCL contract employees were working in the company since 1999. In 2006, he said, PTCL and Telecom Foundation had signed an agreement under which all these employees were given to Telecom Foundation. He said that the Telecom Foundation then terminated all the employees in 2006.

The petitioners’ lawyer told the court that Telecom Foundation had no authority to terminate them from their jobs as they were the employees of the PTCL. He said that the Telecom Foundation’s termination order was unlawful and thus be set aside.

After hearing of the case, the bench declared the employees’ termination order as void and directed the PTCL to reinstate the employees on their old positions in the company.

acer a225
Acer Inc., has announced three tablet devices claimming to challenge Apple’s iPad.

Two of the tablets will be based on Google’s Android platform and feature 7-inch and 10.1-inch screens, while the third 10.1-inch-display device will run on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows software. Acer also released a smartphone with a 4.8-inch screen based on Android that they touted as a phone with the “soul of a tablet.”

Acer’s Aims High: Acer aims to grab about 10% of the market for tablets that bridge the gap between laptops and smartphones such as Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iPhone. Apple demonstrated the appeal of such devices by selling 3 million iPads in the first 80 days after the product debuted in April. The new tablet computers may appeal to price-sensitive consumers, Angela Hsiang, an analyst with KGI Securities Co. in Taipei. “The debut highlights Acer’s official entry into the tablet computer market,” said Hsiang, who rates the stock “outperform.” This is a market that’s still not fully known, not fully satisfied,” Jim Wong, Acer’s head of information-technology products, said yesterday. The company expects 40 million to 50 million tablets will be sold worldwide next year. With the 9.7-inch iPad priced between $499 and $829, consumers looking for cheaper devices may be attracted to other tablets below $400, Hsiang said. Still, it will take some time before the new products can significantly add to Acer’s revenue. “It’s a wide-open market and an opportunity for Acer to make itself better known to a North American market,” said Roger Entner, head of telecom research at Nielsen Co. Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci may be trying to hedge his bets by releasing devices in different sizes. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said last month that devices such as the PlayBook are “dead on arrival” because they are too small to compete with the iPad, which has a 9.7-inch screen.

Price & Availability: The two Android tablets will be available in April and the Microsoft device will go on sale in February. All three will offer Wi-Fi connectivity and allow users to surf the Internet using a 3G connection. Wong said the tablets would likely be in the previously stated range of $299 to $699.

It is estimated that the damage from the floods, which over the past month have affected more than 20 million residents of Pakistan and have killed more than 2,000, is bigger than the 2004 Tsunami, 2005 Kashmir Earthquake and the 2010 Haiti Earthquake combined.

How to Donate (for Subscribers in USA)

To donate through the OTH-Obopay Text-to-Donate offering, people in the US are asked to text the keyword, "PAKISTAN" to the shortcode 48510.

Texters then receive a return text message that includes a link to a mobile internet checkout page where they can elect to pay by debit card or by entering a phone number and PIN.

The funds are then automatically deposited in Mobilink Foundation’s account, giving them fast access to the money to build much needed homes and shelters.

"Suppose you are working as an accountant and the president of your firm Mr. Ali has a little back ground of accounting. This morning, he approached you and said:

"Last year we purchased a piece of land for Rs. 200,000. During this, the inflation has driven prices up by 12 %, and an expert has also just told me that we can sell this land for Rs. 300,000 whereas our balance sheet still shows the land at Rs. 200,000. It should be valued at Rs. 300,000 or at least at Rs. 224,000 (after the effect of 12% inflation)".

Identify accounting principle(s) (GAAP) applicable to this situation which negates Mr. Ali's Claim. "

.............
solution:

Prudence principle: when choosing between two solutions, the one that will be least likely to overstate assets and income should be picked

Cost principle requires companies to account and report based on acquisition costs rather than fair market value for most assets and liabilities. This principle provides information that is reliable (removing opportunity to provide subjective and potentially biased market values), but not very relevant. Thus there is a trend to use fair values. Most debts and securities are now reported at market values.

After discounting all cash flows of projects with its opportunity coats, the net present
values of all three projects are (NPV)
Project A_NPV: +1432
Project B_NPV: -12200
Project C_NPV: +21485
1: On the basis of NPV approach, which project(s) you would select if the projects are independent and why?
ANS _1 :If the projects are independent so the projects that have +NPV should be accepted in the given scenario project A and C have positive NPV
2: On the basis of NPV approach, which project(s) you would select if the projects are mutually exclusive and why
Mutually exclusives are those projects where we have to choose only one out of different options.
If the projects are mutually exclusive the one with higher positive net present value (+NPV) should be chosen
Ans_2: So in given scenario the best project is C with the higher positive npv 21485 among three projects so rationally chose project C

Embedded SIM's
Why keep your SIM card only limited to your cell phones? Why not use this cellular technology to access various other devices too like your camera’s and music players. This idea was put forward by the GSM Association recently to promote the use of SIM cards in embedded form in several devices.

SIM cards have been apparently used in iPad and even some laptops but embedded SIM cards show a vast usage of the cellular technology beyond voice only. According to the GSM Association embedded SIM cards will be an intrinsic part of the device which can be activated remotely unlike the mobile SIM cards that is replaceable. The GSM Association comprise of giants like Verizon, AT&T, China Mobile and Vodafone.

GSMA Chief Executive Rob Conway said, "As our industry moves from connecting phones to connecting a wide range of devices, it is apparent that the embedded SIM could deliver even greater flexibility"

Near field communication (NFC) can be utilized in conjunction with this embedded SIM technology where you can use your music player to communicate wirelessly to a payment station, converting your iPods to e-wallets.

A consortium comprising of leading service providers like SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone have grouped together to work with several SIM manufacturers and promote the embedded SIM technology. This technology is expected to be a part of several devices till next year according to the GSM Association.
