Topic: Global Standardization or international Adaptation

Background:

Companies go global mainly with these three objectives: to increase sales, to diversify/acquire resources or to minimize competitive risk. Once the decision to venture into international markets has been taken, there are two broad strategies, which can be adopted. A fundamental strategic decision has to be made immediately as to; whether employ uniform standards for products (Standardization) or customize the products according to the local culture (Adaptation) to take account of the unique characteristics of each local market. Furthermore standardization is done to achieve economy of scale and the prices of goods are relatively lower with lower profit margins as compared to customized products & adaptation is preferred when host country has higher income level and buying power with greater trend towards luxuries, the prices of goods are relatively higher along with profit margins.

Real Time Case:

Afghanistan is an Asian country with the population over 30 million, covering an area of approximately 647,500 km². Afghanistan became member of World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2004. Afghanistan is enlisted with less developed countries; it has poor economic conditions (almost no major flourishing industry, agriculture and textile), lower income level with less buying power and relatively unstable political environment (security issues, foreign invasion, private action etc.). Social and cultural values of Afghanistan are very much different from Pakistan. One thing to remember here is that; style, trends and preferences of Afghani people and Pakhtunes (residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa of Pakistan) are very much alike when it comes to dresses and shoes. Bata Pakistan is the leading footwear brand of Pakistan. Bata is proved to be a successful shoe manufacturing company in all the market segments (Men, Women, children and people of all ages and cultures) in Pakistan. Consider Bata Pakistan decides to start its business operations in Afghanistan where millions of pairs of shoes may find their consumption.

Most of the nationalized corporations in Pakistan have been showing poor performance over the past decades. One of the main and much propagated reasons is the political interference. Due to political interference, a large number of people were recruited in these corporations. The major reason of this recruitment was to get political support in the masses. Write a simple C language program. Program has following main tasks to be performed.
Parent process creates child process using fork ().
Perform an IPC between related processes using pipe ().
Now specifically child process will do following.(1 mark on each step)
1. Child process should display its PID (process ID)
2. Child process should display its parent's PID
3. Child process should take a string as input from user which would be its VU id.
4. Child should write this test string (VU student ID) using write () system call in IPC pipe.

Problem: Online Garments Inventory Management System

Detail:
Purchasing is always a time consuming task in the era of fast life, where people don’t get enough time to visit the market for shopping. People get jogged down by the routine and by the visits of shopping. Customers not able to get enough variety to choose the right product and also the payment system is not so much transparent in which one needs to know the exact price of the selected product without bargaining.
This Problem leads to the development of a project named “Online garments Inventory management System” where we have shopkeeper selling and customers for purchasing garments online using cart to do shopping. First by having a virtual tour and then by booking the order along with postal address and payment method for smooth and reliable shipment, in order to reach the product at the customer’s doorstep. Technology provides us the ease to purchase anything while staying miles away.

Now keeping in view the above scenario, you are required to answer Q#1 and Q#2 as mentioned below, both questions carry equal marks.

Note: You can get help to solve Q#1 from PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) book,
which is your reference book for the course CS615 and is available in your course website of LMS.

Scenario:

Suppose the airline company wants to store following information:

Flight departure/arrival status i.e. either flight departed/arrived late or in time.
Flight type i.e. either flight is connected or direct.

For storing the departure/arrival status a new table with the name “FlightADStatus” is created with following structure and data:

StatusID	StatusName	Description
01	OnTime	This status is set if flight departs or arrives as per schedule
02	Late	This status is set when the flight departs/arrives behind the specified schedule
03	NotDecided	This status is set when the flight is schedule first time. After the flight departs/arrives, the status is modified

For flight types, a master table with the name “Flight Type” is also created with following structure and data:

01	Direct	A flight is direct when it moves directly from source to destination location
02	Connected	A flight is connected with moves indirectly from source to destination involving multiple legs.

For your convenience the modified ERD (with more abstraction level) is given below:

The requirement of airline is to find out total number of connected or direct flights that departed late or in time with in a certain time period.

A sample result will be:

For this purpose, organization defines a new business process named “Flight_Status_Aggregate”.

There are four steps of dimensional modeling. First step is to identify the business process. Consider the “flight_Status_Aggregate” process described above. Apply the remaining steps of dimensional modeling to find out the fact and dimensional tables.
