It has been reported that more than 1 million mobile phones, infected by a malware, sent spam messages, costing mobile users around 2 million Yuan a day.
The “zombie” mobile virus, which is hidden in an anti-virus mobile application, can send the mobile phone user’s SIM card information to hackers, who then remotely control the mobile phone to send URL links, mostly pay-per-click ads, in text messages to contacts in the user’s address book.
Rapid Growth of Mobile Viruses: Mobile users who receive and click the links will also get infected, thus causing the virus to spread rapidly. This replicating mobile phone virus hit 1 million users in their pockets in the first week of September, according to a report by the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team Center. A mobile phone safety detection company in Beijing detected ten similar malware since September, some of which are able to evade anti-virus software. Discovering the hackers behind the virus is proving difficult. The producer of the mobile application where the virus concealed itself, Sichuan Province-based Chendu Qimiao, whose business get affected due to the association of the malware, said it has nothing to do with the malware and that it is difficult for mobile users to distinguish a normal mobile application from an infected one.
