An intense competition exists between telecommunication operators in Pakistan since 2005. To compete and create a win-win situation, every operator is trying to adopt creative marketing strategies. To continuously enhance the market share, companies try to offer different packages to the target consumers and convince them through bombardment of advertisements through multi channels. On one side companies use creative marketing strategies to win the competition but on the other side the same creates difficulties for individuals to decide what brand and package could be best suitable for them. These activities not only create difficulty in decision making but also create post purchase dissonance. Selection of a most suitable brand is a tricky thing and masses are not capable enough to make shrewd decisions in this regard. This is quite an interesting stage for the telecom companies where they have the margin to grab the attention of this segment of the market which is confused by using different creative marketing strategies and keeping the existing customer intact. Some of the evidence can be observed in series of funny advertisements (Ufone), some of them focus on business community and offer different facilities (easy paisa), some others focus on teenage youth (D juice, It’s fun to be young) etc.

By considering the above scenario, describe with logical reasons that up to what extent the marketing strategies of telecom operators are helpful for customers in making purchase decision? Does this creates confusion or help them achieve desired needs?

These companies are not practicing societal marketing. 

Societal marketing is one in which not only the demand of customers is focused but also the well being of whole society. The companies using this type of marketing usually increase their revenues not only by giving different affordable offers but also by investing values in the social side. This is what societal marketing is, to concern about the company’s as well as social benefits. 

These telecom companies are gathering benefits by the unlimited sms and night calls packages. These packages are just due to negligence of government, but as soon the government will come into action, all this benefit will disappear. 

In Pakistan where people are living ha nd to mouth having more expenses than income. These companies are giving useless packages which will not give anything to them. Especially the youth is more affected by this. They waste their precious time in doing waste forward messages and long meaningless calls on night. Students (vusolutions.com) rarely use these packages for the study related issues. And the late night calls are totally useless for them. These are just the wastage of time and also affect the sleep. So. The telecom companies are not focusing long-term aspects of their packages. 

They can use societal marketing concept which will not only increase the revenue, but also improves the relationship with the customers. And also strengthens this relationship by creating a sense of being socially responsible. 

They can run a campaign regarding a certain social issue or they can initiate some kind of help to solve unemployment. These types of social task not only give a positive attitude towards society’s problem but also help in advertising. This is societal marketing that can be use but unfortunately, the companies are not using these techniques.

Now the companies of Pakistan are not considering the marketing concept on social activities. Companies are just for the purpose of earning profit, but not thinking about the future. They provide lower SMS rates and call packages which have negative impact on the people especially the growing stage people. The companies provide late night offers means to waste the energy talent student in fun rather their study. If we not control this kind of social activities then we are coming on the stage after a few years to damage all the skilled and mental potent ional. Basically it is not against the companies because they unprofitable. But it is totally against the social culture of Pakistan due to negative thinking of people. People just use these products and services for the negative ways rather than positive sense. This condition is imposed on young boys & girls who use these packages in negative ways. Companies are just offering more cheaply and affordable prices for acquiring the market shares just for competitive edge. Companies have divided young people thinking in unethical, unproductive and time consuming activities. These SMS packages and call rates provide benefit to the companies but it against the social culture of Pakistan. They waste their time in sending SMS and making calls late night rather than they study or doing their work. This is a big problem in Pakistan and we are very toward the back in list of developing countries. The telecom companies are the responsible for the damage of social culture and waste the talent due to cheap prices because everyone have to access to these packages and rates. I personally recommended that these packages have the access for those people who specially need for them.

There is a race of different packages in Pakistan between different cellular operators. Most of different packages offered by different companies in this race to get money out of Pakistani Subscribers. Most of the times these advertisements are misleading and facts are not clear to the mobile uses. PTA and other consumer protection organizations have yet not taken any action on the situation how these advertisements are misguiding the people. Telenor is not less than any company in money earning tactics. They have been using different looting tactics including Telnor TeleDoctor to earn the money from mobile users.

The telecommunication companies in Pakistan are succeeding in achieving their goals. As most of the people buy a sim on the basis of the advertisements the company makes. So their advertisements and packages are helpful for their progress.
But these companies are not following the Societal Marketing. Because they are just giving importance to their profit and not thinking of the goodness of society.
These companies provide different packages of sms and night call packages which are a big hurdle for the bright future of the students. They waste their time in using these packages.
I recommend that if these companies will try to follow the societal marketing , they would not spoil the youth.
