Second Commercial LTE Network Launched

On the other hand, AT&T plans to go on-air with LTE in 2011 while Verizon will launch its network later this year. It’s a big step once again in the developing LTE market. Previously, the only LTE commercial operator was TeliaSonera but MetroPCS has also written its name in the communications books now.

In the same city however, MetroPCS will have to compete with Clearwire’s WiMAX offerings. Another factor that might not go quite well with this huge news is the availability of only one LTE enabled handset in the region, that is, the Samsung Craft.

So Samsung also celebrates along side MetroPCS as it launches the world’s first LTE enabled handset.

The operator plans to expand its network to as much as 18 cities by the end of next year. So we once again experience a shift to data from voice.

This fantasy of being the sole LTE operator in US might not last for very long for MetroPCS as, going by the announcements, Verizon’s LTE service would be for a much larger audience. Industry analysts predict US will become the largest LTE market in the world by 2015.
