Certain things happening in the handset industry over the past few years have explicitly stated how important it is to compete not only with numbers but also with innovation. Nokia fired its CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo recently after seeing an apparent loss in the field of innovation against the likes of Apple and Android developers.
Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has been with Nokia since 1980 when he joined the firm as a Corporate Counsel. Since then he held many roles from Assistant Vice President to Chief Executive Officer.
Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo would be replaced by Microsoft’s current head of Business Division Stephen Elop. Elop has previously served as CEO of Juniper Networks. Elop would be Nokia’s first non-Finnish boss. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to be the Chairman of Board of Directors of Nokia Siemens Networks.
"The time is right to accelerate the company's renewal; to bring in new executive leadership with different skills and strengths in order to drive company success. The Nokia board believes that Stephen has the right industry experience and leadership skills to realise the full potential of Nokia," the company said.
Nokia Board hopes Elop will help Nokia regain its innovative and material supremacy in the handset market.
That was just one part of the picture. On Monday, September 13, 2010, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and a member of Nokia Group Executive Board Anssi Vanjoki has resigned from his post. In a press release issued by the company, Anssi Vanjoki said:
"I felt the time has come to seek new opportunities in my life," Anssi Vanjoki says. "At the same time, I am one hundred per cent committed to doing my best for Nokia until my very last working day. I am also really looking forward to this year's Nokia World and sharing news about exciting new devices and solutions."
Some analysts have said that Anssi Vanjoki was the most likely to replace CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.
It seems some shuffling has become a need for Nokia. Two down, more to come?
