Pakistan is on track for export of optic fiber cable to Afghanistan, and African countries. Chairman of Federal ‘B’ Area Association of Trade and Industry (FBAATI) and Director of Premier Cables, Shahid Ismail, said that Pakistan exported approximately 1000 km optic fiber cable to these countries, and further orders were in pipeline.

Pakistan managed to acquire this tender after pounding China and India in quality and price competition. Pakistan has enormous potential for export of optic fiber cable. To take hold of this opening Pakistan has to take steps to decrease the cost of manufacturing in the country. Power and gas tariffs are among the highest in Pakistan, and for that the govt should take appropriate actions to trim down cost of manufacturing.

Citing the example of China, China allows duty-fee trade in of raw material used in manufacturing of optic fiber besides allowing discount on its export. Pakistan allows duty drawback on export of optic fiber, and the procedure of claiming duty drawback is very awkward and demanded that SRO involving duty drawback must be simplified. Also the government has to take proper actions to control smuggling of optic fiber from China. Presently around 400 to 500 km optic fiber is being smuggled into Pakistan per month.
