Motorola earns its first profits after three years, and this is attributed to Android O.S.
In its third-quarter earnings report Motorola reported that its mobile phone sales increased 6% year-over-year to $5.8 billion, with a net income of $108 million. Motorola also saw its first growth quarter since the 4th Q of 2006.
Android Brings Profit to Motorola: The sales of Android smartphones were the driving force behind Motorola’s turnaround. Motorola sold 3.8 million smartphones in the past quarter (after introducing 22 different smartphones over the past year), and a total of 9.1 million devices overall. Motorola’s mobile device sales jumped to over $2 billion from $1.7 billion last year. A year ago, Motorola didn’t have any smartphones to its name — so its growth in that market is nothing short of remarkable. Motorola shipped 13.6 million mobile devices last year, compared to the 9.1 million this quarter — but those were mostly cheap low-margin mobile devices. With the advent of Android, Motorola has dedicated itself to high-end smartphones like the Droid series.
