PTA ex-chief rejects allegations of fiscal irregularity

ISLAMABAD: Former chairman of Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) Maj Gen (r) Shahzada Alam appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Monday and rejected the allegations of financial bungling leveled against him. The PAC, which met in the Parliament House with Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in the chair, reviewed the audit report on telecommunication sector for fiscal year 2009-10. The PAC was informed that 24 items, including seven expensive laptops, four cell phones, diesel generator, colour printer and exercise machine worth Rs 2.13 million were issued to the former PTA chairman. Maj Gen Alam said he had made payment of four laptops and two cell phones to the PTA and admitted that he should not have purchased the exercise machine from the PTA budget.
