The European Commission has sent details of a new standard connection for charging mobile phones to world’s 14 famous mobile phone manufacturers.

The technical specifications of this standard mobile charger are based on the micro-USB connector that many mobile manufacturers have already started usung. Data-enabled mobile phones are expected to be predominant in the market within two years, on the basis of the Micro-USB connector. The agreement was established in June 2009 and signed by Apple – iPhone manufacturer, Emblaze Mobile, Huawei Technologies, LG Electronics, Motorola Mobility, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research In Motion (RIM) – maker of the BlackBerry, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, TCT Mobile (ALCATEL), Texas Instruments and Atmel.

New Standard Charger for Mobile Phones: The micro-USB jack is becoming common as manufacturers have made the shift in preparation. European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship, called on manufacturers to show their support for the new standard. “Now it is time for industry to show its commitment to sell mobile phones for the new charger. The common charger will make life easier for consumers, reduce waste and benefit businesses. It is a true win-win situation,” he said. The Commission said that “Incompatibility of chargers for mobile phones is not only a major inconvenience for users, but also a considerable environmental problem. Users who want to change their mobile phones must usually acquire a new charger and dispose of the old one, even if it is in good condition.”

Common Mobile Charger: The common charger is cross-compatible with data-enabled mobile telephones of different brands. The introduction of a universal charger backed by the major mobile phone manufacturers, is however a welcome step forward for consumers as well as the environment. Now, wherever you are, the frustration of your mobile phone running out of power, and the inability of finding a compatible charger, will be a thing of the past.
