Consumer Reports has responded to Apple’s decision of not providing free cases for its iPhone 4 from October 1. The cases were being used as a temporary solution to iPhone 4’s reception issues.

According to Consumer Reports: “Putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us. We therefore continue not to recommend the iPhone 4, and call on Apple to provide a permanent fix for the phone’s reception issues.”

iPhone’s Reception Issues: Consumer Reports originally announced in July that it couldn’t recommend the iPhone 4 due to reception issues related to iPhone 4’s external antenna. After independent testing in a “controlled environment,” the organization found that the iPhone 4 was subject to signal loss when held without a bumper and said declared that there is “no reason not to buy” the new smartphone.

Bumpers from AppleCare: Apple announced on Friday that it would not extend its free case offer, which is expiring on Sept. 30. Those users who are experiencing noticeable loss of signal when they hold the phone can request a free bumper by contacting AppleCare. Consumer Reports also took notice of the change in available cases. As during the free case program, seven cases, “including some from third-party manufacturers,” were offered. While, the users who will contact AppleCare after Sept. 30 will only have Apple’s own Bumper case.

Less Consumer-friendly: The consumer buying advice group announced this Monday on its official blog that it refuses to recommend the iPhone 4, owing to Apple’s decision of discontinuing the iPhone 4 free case program and it was seen as “less consumer-friendly.” Consumer Reports also write, “Putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us."
